Communication is a powerful tool that can help us reach our goals through persuasion. However, if we don't know how to use it effectively, we risk closing doors and missing out on many opportunities.
No matter what industry we work in, keeping a few tips in mind to improve our communication skills, and knowing how to use them at the right moment, can lead us to success.
- Make eye contact. Looking the other person in the eye will make you come across as confident and trustworthy. Your body language will reinforce your interest in the topic being discussed.
- Listen before speaking. Misunderstandings often happen because we don't know how to listen, or because we keep interrupting the other person's conversation to push our own opinions. When interacting, let the other person express all their ideas, mentally note the ones you'd like to reinforce or reply to, and wait for a pause before giving your response.
- Be direct. One way to show respect for the other person is to be direct in your communication. Skip long presentations, unnecessary emails or cumbersome texts that don't clearly express what you want to say. The other person will appreciate your ability to get to the point when communicating your ideas.
- Use professional language. Save casual language for time with family or gatherings with friends. When you're in front of your boss, a client or a service provider, use professional language that lets you communicate freely but appropriately for the work context, without resorting to overly fancy or technical words.
- Read. The best way to strengthen our spoken and written communication is by reading. Check news and information about your industry, current events and other topics of interest every day. This will expand your vocabulary and give you an interesting topic of conversation at all times.
